A Blast of Crossover Fun: ‘DC x Sonic the Hedgehog’ #2 Review

Justice League meets the Blue Blur! In DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #2 by Flynn and Thomas, Sonic and his friends become the League’s surprise backup against Darkseid’s invading forces. Apokolips is hitting Sonic’s world hard, but can even these combined heroes stop a New God? Let’s dive in!

This issue throws readers immediately back into the fray, with Flash and Sonic confronting Darkseid as he seizes a Chaos Emerald. Led by Sonic’s signature confidence, the heroes instantly showcase dynamic, in-sync teamwork, launching the comic with palpable energy. After a brutal initial encounter forces a regroup, the difficulty of finding the Emeralds becomes clear. This prompts the genuinely menacing Darkseid to escalate his threat, vowing to “burn this world to ashes” to achieve his goals, solidifying him as a formidable antagonist.

The conflict then sprawls globally, featuring punchy battles like Batman and Shadow versus Steppenwolf, and the Heroes vs Darkseid, highlighted by Thomas’ striking artwork. The issue culminates in a massive brawl where, just as Darkseid seems victorious, Batman makes a desperate, potentially universe-altering move to save Sonic and the others, leaving readers on a thrilling cliffhanger.

This comic is a blast, thanks to Ian Flynn’s incredibly charming writing. He nails every character’s voice; everyone feels perfectly in character and gets a chance to shine. Even with a huge cast, which often sidelines smaller heroes, Flynn makes sure everyone contributes meaningfully and looks good doing it. The humor lands brilliantly too – Flash is funny, Sonic’s even funnier, and seeing Shadow’s heightened arrogance play off Batman is unexpectedly hilarious (in a great way!). The characterization here is simply stellar.

Adam Bryce Thomas’s fantastic art complements the writing. It’s dynamic and expressive and captures the speed of the action perfectly, with epic shots that feel straight out of the cartoons—a nice bonus hit of nostalgia! Thomas masterfully handles the chaos of a large cast and intense action; panels are packed with detail and energy, but never become cluttered or confusing. He uses space with precision, keeping everything clear and impactful.

Seeing the Sonic crew and the Justice League together just works. The pairings feel natural, leading to awesome visuals like Wonder Woman riding shotgun on Amy’s convertible as they drive past a sunset. Flynn also perfectly captures team dynamics, especially in scenes like the League debating contingencies. Batman’s caution is understandable, but Superman’s optimistic trust in their new allies (“Yeah, we’re going in blind, but we’re the Justice League, and we trust our new friends”) feels spot-on for his character. Moments like these highlight Flynn’s deep understanding of these heroes, which makes this comic special.

Matt Herms’s coloring is outstanding and deserves praise. Despite the potential pitfalls of using so many vibrant colors – blues, reds, greens, blacks, pinks, and more – Herms expertly ensures they elevate the comic rather than distract. Becca Carey’s lettering is also noteworthy, providing clean and easy-to-follow text. The sound effects were particularly effective, including the “KRAK-BOOM” of Darkseid’s omega beams, the planet-shaking “RRRRRUMBLE,” and the multi-colored “BOOM” tubes opening. It all combines to make a great product.

DC x Sonic the Hedgehog #2 delivers a thrilling, action-packed continuation as Sonic and the Justice League unite against Darkseid, highlighted by dynamic teamwork and a genuinely menacing villain. The comic continues to nail every voice while offering fantastic, expressive artwork perfectly capturing this crossover epic’s chaotic, fun energy.
